Marie-Christine BORNES VAROL pursued studies in Spanish (Universities of Grenoble and Paris 4 – Sorbonne) and French literature (Paris 4). She resided nine years in Istanbul (Turkey) where she learnt Turkish and Judeo-Spanish and collected a huge corpus of spoken Judeo-Spanish, for her dissertation (defended in 1998) untitled: Le judéo-espagnol vernaculaire d’Istanbul (published at Peter Lang’s in 2008). Senior lecturer in Spanish since 1992, she taught linguistics and Medieval literature in Nancy then in Poitiers. In 2005, she was appointed professor at the INALCO to teach Sephardic and Judeo-Spanish Judaism (Department of Hebrew Studies), after having received the “Habilitation to supervise doctoral thesis” from la Sorbonne – Paris 4 in 2004 for her research on language and culture contact and the edition of an annotated contemporary Judeo-Spanish proverb book and its ancient sources (Paris, Geuthner, 2010). She teaches Judeo-Spanish (language, literature and civilization) at NALCO since 1991, and has published many articles on language contact, on the medieval roots of Judeo-Spanish proverbs and their link to rabbinical exempla. She co-organized with S. Luchitsky (Historical Anthropology – Sciences Academy of Moscow) the PIEA (International Program of Advanced Studies) Homo Legens on the connection between written texts and the orality in the Middle-Ages (Brepols, 2010). Member of the UMR 8099 from 1998 to 2010 and of the CERMOM (INALCO), she initiated with M.-S. Ortola, the ALIENTO Project.
